Unveiling Fluoride: Safe Intake and Health Risks

Fluorine, with atomic number 9 and symbol F, is known for its reactivity and compounds, particularly fluorides. One vital concern is determining safe fluoride intake. The FDA recommends 0.05-0.07 mg per kg of body weight daily for caries prevention. For a 90 kg individual, that's up to 4.5 mg of fluoride daily.

Calculating sodium fluoride content: 10 ml of a 0.2% solution contains 10 mg of sodium fluoride. In toothpaste (1450 ppm sodium fluoride), 10 ml holds about 14.5 mg of sodium fluoride.

After brushing, fluoride residue varies but is influenced by toothpaste quantity and post-brushing rinsing. Maintaining the recommended toothpaste amount and avoiding immediate rinsing ensures fluoride persistence.

Now, considering daily fluoride intake from various sources:

- Gums: 0.7 mg

- Mouthwash: 4.0 mg

- Toothpaste: 14.5 mg (if used as described)

- Water: 0.8 mg

If you use all these products in a day, your total fluoride intake would be:

0.7 mg + 4.0 mg + 14.5 mg + 0.8 mg = 20.0 mg of fluoride in a day.

This is a high calculation, but in some cases, it could be true. In summary, a 90 kg individual can tolerate up to 4.5 mg of fluoride daily, following caries prevention guidelines. This article provides insights into fluoride intake and potential health risks, and the total intake from different sources.

My sources:

Gums: flux

Flux Mouthwash

Sensodyne Toothpaste

When I use toothpaste without fluoride, I discovered that by swishing virgin coconut oil in my mouth for 30 minutes, it actually softens the tartar enough for me to use a toothpick to remove it.
